Our Story & Our Vision
With sun in our mind and Bali in our heart, we dreamt about an eternal summer state of mind – and all-year-round summer clothes.
Founded in 2013 by Filipa Fialho, Sal de Pipa is a Portuguese resort & beachwear brand immersed in wanderlust and full of salty vibes.
Sal de Pipa is for the woman with an effortlessly cool style and a summer state of mind. Combining unique prints, bright colours and easy silhouettes, each collection is carefully made in Indonesia – using artisanal techniques - and Portugal – applying innovative digital processes...
Travelling plays an special role in the design and production methods.
Our garments take inspiration from the exoticism and beauty experienced while visiting Bali. The local craftsmanship, unique colourful prints and laid-back style of the island life matched the desire of creating easy, beautiful and sustainable collections.
At the same time, we value our roots and the quality, tradition and perfectionism of the Portuguese textile industry - as well as the beach mood which adds the sal (Portuguese word for salt) to our brand.
Our collections are designed and produced in Indonesia and Portugal by local factories and employees - each country adds its own identity to our garments.
At Sal de Pipa, we can proudly say our production processes are considered and ethical. Our mission is to deliver beautiful and special clothes while creating a positive change for those who want to live an authentic, sustainable life.
Taking steps to improve our environmental and ethical processes are a constant work in progress, but we do our best to make Sal de Pipa as sustainable as possible. From fabrics and technologies used, to factorie and employment conditions, it has been clear for us that actions must be taken into reduce the our impact and replenish the world’s resources.
We believe in supporting local communities, respecting and protecting the environment and doing our best to make the world a better place - one little step at a time.
Our Designs & Prints
Right from the start of dreaming up our designs, we work to create effortless and comfortable silhouettes that celebrate the feminine figure. This process begins with us thinking about what we want to wear and how we want to feel when wearing Sal de Pipa.
In every season, travels give us a spark of inspiration. Nature, exotic landscapes and cultures – there’s always something catching our eyes overseas.
After narrowing our focus, fabrics come first. We are committed to source the most beautiful and most sustainable fabrics possible to bring those designs to life. Additionally to this, we strive to create our own artwork.
While the hand-dye techniques are applied in Bali, by the local artisans, our patterns are hand designed in Portugal using watercolours. Once completed, the patterns are digitally printed, meticulously measured and draped to match the sketch.
Our Fabrics
viscose
Considered a semi-synthetic fabric, viscose is considered closest to rayon because it too is made from wood pulp (a cellulose based fibre). Invented in 1883 as an affordable version of silk, the material has many of those much-loved characteristics, which is why it’s used so much in garment design today.
As a plant-based fibre, viscose is not inherently toxic or polluting. However, we are aware of the impacts of chemical and manufacturing techniques associated to its production and we are actively working to avoid and reduce them.
Rayon
Rayon has been known to take on the properties of silk, cotton, wool, and others, and can be used in nearly any type of clothing. This breathable fiber is made from regenerated wood pulp – a manmade renewable plant material that is a natural cellulose-based raw fibre with a silk-like aesthetic and a beautiful soft drape.
Though rayon is derived from natural materials, it requires certain chemicals, so it’s considered to be a semi-synthetic fabric. An added bonus is that is uses half the energy to produce than cotton.
Cotton
A natural cellulosic fibre which is 100% biodegradable, cotton is the light breathable fabric that keeps your skin cool in summer, flutters flirtingly in the breeze and is extremely durable and hypoallergenic.
However cotton is a naturally occurring fibre, it’s production is nevertheless haunted by claims of pollution, exploitation, and even slavery. At Sal de Pipa, we use cotton less frequently and will continue to do so until we find a trusted organic cotton source.
